How Often Do I Need To Exercise To Get Results?

A question I often get from clients is “how often do I need to exercise to get results?” 

Here are the answers I tell them, assuming they are healthy and don’t have any pre-existing medical issues:

If you want to get minimal results, do the following:

  • strength training 2 times per week.
  • cardio and flexibility training 3 times per week

This is kind of like getting a “C” on your Report Card.  Anything less you are wasting your time.

Want to get great results and achieve a B+ on your “Report Card,” do the following:

  • strength training 3 times per week
  • cardio and flexibility training 5 times per week

How about getting excellent results, like getting an “A” on your Report Card?  Do the following:

  • strength training 3 - 4 times per week
  • cardio and flexibility training 6 - 7 days per week

How about an “A+?”  Add some balance training, reactive training, core training, and power training to the above.

This sounds like a lot to get the A+, but it’s really not that bad.  I’m only talking about 60 - 75 minutes per workout.  You can even get by with less time in your workouts if they are intense.  In fact, some of my workouts last only 15 - 20 minutes.   No need to run a marathon or lift weights like an extremist bodybuilder and spend more than 2 hours (this is crazy and totally unecessary).
